Bochy downplays Velez's baserunning

|
LOS ANGELES -- Eugenio Velez's likely increase in playing time will put him at risk for more baserunning gaffes, which have been common with him lately.

But Giants manager Bruce Bochy didn't seem overly concerned Sunday about Velez's lapses. Bochy said that he hasn't lectured Velez about his recent shortcomings on the basepaths, believing that the 27-year-old will get the message eventually.

The Giants hope that happens within the next few weeks as Velez fills in for center fielder Aaron Rowand, who went on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

"Part of coaching or teaching is repeat, repeat," Bochy said, indicating that first-base coach Roberto Kelly, who handles baserunning, and third-base coach Tim Flannery, who's constantly reminding players about fundamentals and game situations, will convey what Velez needs to hear.

Friday, Velez strayed too far from first base and was doubled off when Edgar Renteria hit a line drive to second baseman Blake DeWitt. Saturday, Velez tried to score from second base as Pablo Sandoval walked on a pitch that eluded catcher A.J. Ellis and was thrown out at home plate.

"We don't want to take away from his aggressiveness," Bochy said. "At the same time, he needs to be smarter on the bases."
