Rockies at the plate: Colorado amassed five hits in the first three innings but mustered just one run on Melvin Mora's third-inning groundout, which followed Jonathan Herrera's single and Carlos Gonzalez's double. Herrera and Gonzalez collected two hits apiece. Hector Gomez lined a two-run triple in the sixth inning.Giants at the plate: Juan Uribe's three-run homer fueled a four-run second inning that included Aaron Rowand's RBI single. Bengie Molina went 3-for-3 and punctuated a three-run fifth inning with a two-run homer. Pablo Sandoval contributed an RBI double in the fifth.
With 30 pitchers in camp, the Giants need all the innings they can find. That's why their split-squad games Saturday against Arizona and Milwaukee are so significant. No. 4 starter Jonathan Sanchez is scheduled to make his first appearance of the spring as he opposes the Arizona Diamondbacks and one of their prized offseason acquisitions, Edwin Jackson. Kevin Pucetas, competing for the fifth starting spot with Madison Bumgarner, Todd Wellemeyer and Joe Martinez, will pitch at Maryvale Baseball Park against Milwaukee and left-hander Randy Wolf.
