Giants get call overturned thanks to replay

Ramirez's stolen base erased after review under MLB's expanded system

LOS ANGELES -- Baseball's replay system worked in the Giants' favor Friday in their game against the Dodgers as manager Bruce Bochy succcessfully challenged a call on a stolen base, thus halting a Dodgers rally before it began.

With the Giants leading, 8-4, Hanley Ramirez singled off Juan Gutierrez to lead off the Dodgers' half of the seventh inning. Ramirez took off for second and was ruled safe by umpire Marty Foster. This prompted an agonized reaction from shortstop Joaquin Arias, the usually impassive Giant who made the tag.

Bochy jogged onto the field to express his opposition to the call and submit his challenge. The call was reviewed for less than two minutes and overturned, with crew chief Joe West signaling out. Television replays clearly showed that Arias tagged Ramirez before the latter's left foot hit the bag. Ramirez left the field before the call was overturned, suggesting that he sensed what would happen.

The ruling left Bochy with a 1-1 record in challenges this season. He fruitlessly contested a safe call on Matt Cain's attempted pickoff of Arizona's A.J. Pollock on Tuesday.

"Hopefully at the end of the season, you have more go your way," Bochy said after the Giants' 8-4 win.
