SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Manager Bruce Bochy revealed a soft spot in his heart for former Giants Eli Whiteside and Jonathan Sanchez, who performed for the Cubs in their 3-2 exhibiton victory Monday over San Francisco.

Whiteside spent 2009-12 with the Giants, spanning their pair of World Series titles. Sanchez won five of his last six decisions in 2010 to help San Francisco surge to the National League West crown.

"I pull for these guys. They did a lot for the organization," Bochy said.

In Monday's game, Whiteside played six innings and went 0-for-3 before Sanchez pitched a perfect ninth inning to record a save.

"I was telling Johnny that I was trying to get a helmet and a bat myself," Bochy said jokingly. "But I ran out of time. I was just waiting for somebody to get on base."
