SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong, two-fifths of San Francisco's starting rotation, pitched two scoreless innings apiece Friday to help the Giants defeat the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-3, in a Cactus League game.

Bumgarner, the Giants' scheduled Opening Day starter, and Vogelsong, San Francisco's projected No. 5 starter, each allowed one hit and stranded a runner in scoring position.

Milwaukee ace Yovani Gallardo pitched two scoreless innings before the Giants broke through for a pair of runs in the third off right-hander Tyler Thornburg. Mark Minicozzi homered, Ehire Adrianza tripled and Angel Pagan lofted a sacrifice fly.

"I didn't think I got it, but I'll take it," Minicozzi said of his homer, indicating his doubt that he made solid contact.

Milwaukee's Caleb Gindl homered off Brett Bochy in the fifth inning to halve the difference. But the Giants added two runs in the seventh off Brewers reliever Jose De La Torre. Second baseman Eugenio Velez, a former Giant, mishandled Adrianza's grounder with the bases loaded and nobody out to allow a run to score. Gregor Blanco's sacrifice fly delivered the other run.

In the ninth, the Brewers' Hector Gomez tripled home a run and Matt Pagnozzi singled in another before the Giants secured the victory.

Up next: Intent on sustaining the momentum he built in last season's second half, Matt Cain will make his first Cactus League start when he faces the Chicago Cubs on Saturday in Mesa, live on Gameday Audio at 12:05 p.m. PT. Cain fashioned a 2.36 ERA in 11 starts after the All-Star break, compared with 5.06 ERA in 19 outings beforehand.
