SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Center fielder Angel Pagan experienced back tightness and refrained from participating in Sunday's workout.

Manager Bruce Bochy said that Pagan's back "kind of locked up on him" during a pre-workout meeting. Bochy rated Pagan's playing status as day to day but expressed hope that the switch-hitter could resume drills Monday. Asked if he believed he can practice Monday, Pagan said, "Of course."

Bochy said second baseman Marco Scutaro, also plagued by back problems, is "doing a lot better" and even performed some baseball-related activities on an auxiliary diamond. Scutaro still might need at least another 10 days before he can participate in workouts.

Right-hander Santiago Casilla, who arrived late from the Dominican Republic due to visa problems, pitched live batting practice and looked smooth. Bochy was pleased that Casilla's right knee, which forced him onto the disabled list in the middle of last season, apparently wasn't an issue.

"It's neat to see him running around the way he did," Bochy said.
