Sanchez hopes to return Friday

CINCINNATI -- Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez hopes to be sufficiently recovered from his sore left shoulder to start Friday night's opener of the critical four-game series against the Colorado Rockies.

"That's the plan," said Sanchez, who missed the entire three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.

Said manager Bruce Bochy: "I'm confident that he'll be ready to go."

Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly in his most recent game, Monday's 10-1 victory at New York against the Mets. But he already was in discomfort by then, having strained a muscle in his shoulder while taking indoor batting practice a few days earlier.

"Finally, on that last day in New York, it was just too much," said Sanchez, who was acquired July 30 from Pittsburgh. "I felt like I couldn't swing too well and it was affecting not only me, but the team. Obviously it's very frustrating. I've played through a lot of injuries and a lot of pain, but when it starts to affect your performance, it's tough to go out there and not be where you need to be to help the guys."

Sanchez has hit safely in 11 of his 13 games as a Giant, batting .304 (17-for-56) in that span.
