Stewart grateful for time spent with Giants

NEW YORK -- Chris Stewart expressed gratitude toward the Giants for solidifying his Major League career.

Following his half-season with San Francisco in 2011, Stewart has spent two full years with the Yankees after spending most of his first nine professional seasons in the Minor Leagues. He has been New York's primary catcher this season, appearing in a career-high 104 games and batting .213 entering Friday's series opener.

The Giants summoned Stewart from Triple-A Fresno after Buster Posey sustained the horrific injuries to his left leg on May 25. Stewart played 67 games for the Giants, starting 51 of them, before he was traded him to the Yankees on April 4, 2012, for right-hander George Kontos.

"I think that was where I caught my break," Stewart said of his time in San Francisco. "I was kind of waiting for quite a few years in the Minor Leagues. I was hoping to get established and show what I could do on a national scene. That kind of opened the door to a bunch of other teams. I can't thank the Giants enough for giving me that opportunity. They're the ones who kind of put me in the spotlight and allowed me to show what I could do."
