Romo gratified to record 30-save milestone

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sergio Romo relished becoming the sixth Giant to reach the 30-save level, which remains the baseline for excellence and consistency among closers.

"For me, it's an unbelievable number," said Romo, who recorded No. 30 last Saturday at Miami. "It's something I'm very proud to say I've accomplished. I've been able to reward my teammates that many times and it's very gratifying. I don't feel that I'm done there. I feel my team is going to put me in position to possibly get more, and I'm ready for those opportunities."

In his first year as the team's full-time closer, Romo joined Rod Beck, Greg Minton, Robb Nen, Brian Wilson and Tim Worrell in the Giants' 30-save club. Remarking that he has learned from Nen, who formerly tutored Giants relievers during Spring Training, and Wilson, an ex-teammate, Romo said, "I'm part of them now."

Skeptics doubted that Romo, who weathered occasional injuries in previous seasons, would be able to handle the physical demands of closing.

"I think if anybody doubted that I would last this long -- here you go," Romo said. "This is something all my teammates have urged and pushed me to achieve. They've backed me."
