Disabled list possible after Affeldt strains groin

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants left-hander Jeremy Affeldt strained his left groin during the sixth inning of Saturday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks and could be headed for the disabled list.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said after San Francisco's 4-3 victory over Arizona that Affeldt underwent a postgame MRI exam. Results wouldn't be known until Sunday morning, Bochy said. But, referring to the nature of Affeldt's injury, Bochy added, "That's never a good area. It's a possible DL."

Affeldt replaced reliever George Kontos with one out, runners on first and second base and the Giants clinging to a 4-2 lead. Affeldt coaxed a fly to right field from the first hitter he faced, Cliff Pennington, but grabbed himself in pain while throwing a 3-1 fastball to the next batter, pinch-hitter A.J. Pollock, who fouled off the pitch.

Bochy and assistant athletic trainer Mark Gruesbeck examined Affeldt briefly before the reliever left the field.

Affeldt, 1-4 with a 3.51 ERA in 38 appearances, endured a stint on the 15-day disabled list from April 15-May 3 with a strained right side.
