Romo proud and grateful for All-Star nod

SAN DIEGO -- It's difficult to imagine a more appreciative All-Star than Giants closer Sergio Romo.

Romo was officially added to the National League squad on Sunday, along with Pirates right-hander Mark Melancon. Romo's good fortune was announced after a pair of initially selected pitchers, Pittsburgh's Jeff Locke and Washington's Jordan Zimmermann, were ruled inactive for Tuesday's Midsummer Classic at New York's Citi Field.

As Romo has ascended in status, he has retained the humbling memory of being a 28th-round pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. That shaped his reaction to earning his first All-Star berth.

"To be honest, I still feel like I weaseled my way into the big leagues," said Romo, who entered Sunday with 21 saves in 24 chances. "Everything that's happened, I feel very fortunate."

Romo, 30, plans to make the All-Star Game a family affair. Three generations of Romos will be present, as he'll be joined by his father, Frank, and oldest son, Rilen.

"It's a very proud moment," he said. "I never saw myself making an All-Star team. Now that it's happening, I'm very proud, and I'm proud that my teammates congratulated me and let me know that I'm deserving. To know that they feel I'm deserving, that's what's most gratifying about it."
