Arias hits DL after appendectomy

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants expect infielder Joaquin Arias to be sidelined for at least two weeks after he underwent an emergency appendectomy late Sunday night.

Arias, 28, was batting .282 in 60 games, including 23 starts. Giants manager Bruce Bochy has relied on Arias' versatility, starting him in 13 games at third base, six at shortstop and four at first base. Arias also has proven handy offensively. His double on Sunday was one of only three hits in eight innings off Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw.

"Tough news for him," Bochy said. "He was swinging the bat well."

The Giants recalled infielder Nick Noonan from Triple-A Fresno to replace Arias on the active roster. It's the third stint with San Francisco this year for Noonan, who entered Monday batting .212 with four RBIs in 85 at-bats spanning 48 games. With Fresno, Noonan was hitting .311 in 11 games.
