"It's not bad to give it another day just to make sure I won't have any setbacks," Pagan said. "I'm going to prepare just like I would for any game and be ready just in case."
Bochy said the decision to rest Pagan an extra day was made easier considering Andres Torres has been producing and is a leadoff hitter himself.
"We have the luxury of having three guys who can lead off," Bochy said. "[Gregor] Blanco, Torres and Pagan are all capable. It's one of the toughest spots to fill. There are a lot of guys who are not comfortable leading off."
Pagan felt something in his hamstring during the fifth inning of Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, when he picked up a single by Matt Kemp and threw the ball in.
"I'm going to play catch with the guys and see how it feels," Pagan said Monday. "I'll try making a long throw tomorrow, to see how it feels pushing off."
Bochy said Pagan would be available to pinch-hit or for defensive purposes.
Bochy also said it allowed him to give Francisco Peguero another start in left field.
