"It's good to get him going on his rehab," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It took longer than anybody thought. For him, he's in Spring Training."
The 28-year-old has spent parts of four years in the Major Leagues, most recently with the Kansas City Royals last year.
"There is no target date for him," Bochy said. "We want him to continue to get better, with no more setbacks."
Abreu is a career .252 hitter with four home runs and 46 RBIs in 168 games. He's also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
