SAN DIEGO -- Jeremy Affeldt hopes to continue his recovery from a strained right side by throwing off a bullpen mound Saturday, though manager Bruce Bochy said "it'll be close" when asked Friday whether the left-hander will be activated from the disabled list when he's eligible.

Bochy said that Affeldt, who can leave the disabled list as early as Tuesday, also must throw to hitters in a simulated game or live batting practice before the Giants can determine whether the reliever can rejoin the active roster.

Affeldt kept busy on Friday by playing catch at a 90-foot distance, throwing 20 pitches hard on flat ground and throwing 20 more simulated pitches off a bullpen mound with a towel in his hand for resistance.

Affeldt, who signed a three-year, $18 million contract extension in the offseason, has no record and a 5.79 ERA in six games.
