Surkamp has bullpen session in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- This wasn't the triumphant return to AT&T Park that Eric Surkamp awaits, but it was a baby step forward nonetheless.

Continuing to recover from Tommy John elbow surgery, Surkamp threw a bullpen session at the ballpark for the Giants' coaching staff, giving him a change of scenery from the club's Scottsdale, Ariz., training complex.

Surkamp said that he'll again throw off a bullpen mound sometime next week and will work out with the Giants when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks from April 29-May 1.

Surkamp, who missed the entire 2012 season and underwent surgery last July 24, hopes to perform in extended spring training games by sometime in June. He estimated that he's throwing at about 75 percent of his full strength.

"I'm still working up to [100 percent]," said Surkamp, 25. "But everything's been great so far."

Still regarded as a potential future starter for the Giants, Surkamp posted a 2-2 record with a 5.74 ERA in six starts for San Francisco at the end of the 2011 season.
