PHOENIX -- Matt Cain felt that he benefited from Sunday's outing against the Milwaukee Brewers, though a mildly upset stomach limited him to his third three-inning performance in a row.
"I was in pretty much every situation," said Cain, acknowledging that he probably would have worked a fourth inning without his queasiness. "I had guys on base in every inning and I got to throw enough from the windup."
Cain, who allowed one run and four hits to Milwaukee, still has three weeks to prepare for his April 1 Opening Day start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But he doesn't want to fall into the trap of thinking that he can pace himself too much. He'll begin throwing sliders in his next appearance or the one after that, which will represent another step in his progress toward regaining regular-season form.
"It can't be in your mind, 'Hey, we've got three weeks left,'" Cain said. "You have to start getting your mental side right and start ramping it up."
