Giants sign Affeldt to three-year contract

|

The San Francisco Giants have signed left-handed relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt to a three-year contract through 2015, Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

Affeldt completed his fourth full campaign in a Giants uniform this past season, going 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA (19er, 63.1ip) in 67 relief appearances. He struck out 8.1 batters per 9.0 innings and issued just 3.3 walks per 9.0 frames. He also allowed just one home run in his 63.1 innings and didn't issue a long ball in his final 42.2 regular season frames.

The 33-year-old left-hander was one of the Giants' top relievers throughout the 2012 postseason, tossing 10.1-scoreless innings in 10 appearances. One of his biggest outings came in Game 4 of the World Series at Detroit in which he struck out four consecutive batters (Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Delmon Young and Andy Dirks) in the eighth and ninth innings to help preserve a 3-3 tie in the Giants' 4-3 clinching victory.

In his four seasons as a Giant, Affeldt has gone 10-9 with a 2.73 ERA (72er, 237.1ip) and 10 saves in 17 opportunities in 261 relief outings. Overall, the 11-year Major League veteran has posted a record of 36-37 with a 4.01 ERA (357er, 801.2ip) along with 28 saves in 621 games (42 starts) for Kansas City (2002-06), Colorado (2006-07), Cincinnati (2008) and San Francisco (2009-2012).
