Posey is players' choice for NL's top comeback

SAN FRANCISCO -- If Buster Posey has any carpentry skills, he might consider building himself a bigger trophy case.

The Giants catcher picked up another honor Monday night when he was named the National League's Comeback Player of the Year in a vote by his peers in the annual Players Choice Awards, presented by the Major League Baseball Players Association.

"I think anytime that you are selected for an award by your teammates and peers, it is a great honor," Posey said on MLB Network's awards telecast. "It is something for me coming off the injury last year and I was just happy to be back on the field. So, to be recognized by the guys means a lot to me."

Posey also received the league's Comeback Player of the Year distinction last month in a vote conducted by MLB.com reporters, as well as the Giants' "Willie Mac" Award as the club's most inspirational performer during the 2012 season.

In addition, Posey figures to be a contender for one of the Silver Slugger awards, which will be announced on Thursday. And the 25-year-old ranks as a leading candidate to capture the NL Most Valuable Player Award on Nov. 15.

Winner of the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 2010, Posey endured a harrowing home-plate collision with the Marlins' Scott Cousins on May 25, 2011. He sustained a fractured bone in his lower left leg and torn ligaments in his ankle. Posey underwent surgery four days later to have two screws inserted in his leg to provide stability. They were removed on July 22 of that year.

Fully recovered for this season, Posey hastened the Giants' surge to their second World Series triumph in three years by batting an MLB-high .336 with 24 home runs and 103 RBIs. He became more productive as the season progressed, hitting .385 with 23 doubles, 14 homers and 60 RBIs in 71 games after the All-Star break.
