SAN FRANCISCO -- Taking a cue from Bruce Bochy, several Giants sported 49ers caps in the clubhouse Friday, one day after the manager eschewed his usual headgear for the Niners' deep-red lid.
Bochy initially donned the 49ers cap in support of quarterback Alex Smith, who was threatened with a $15,000 fine for wearing a Giants cap in his postgame interview sessions. The NFL permits its players to wear only league-licensed items 90 minutes before and after games.
One Giants player said that he and others changed caps to express support not just for Smith, but also for Bochy, who said that infielder Ryan Theriot provided the hats.
Asked how much feedback he received since word spread of his act, Bochy said, "Quite a bit. I've gotten a lot of texts from Niners fans and friends of mine. Not one negative one. That's unusual for a manager."
