Posey catches opener, likely to rest soon

CHICAGO -- Buster Posey will start his eighth consecutive game Saturday, but the All-Star catcher likely will get a break soon, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said after Friday's 6-4 loss to the Cubs.

It won't happen Saturday, as Bochy is planning to play Posey at first base against Chicago. Posey's durability has been an issue, given the discomfort he has experienced in his left ankle and hamstring.

All season, Bochy has made sure to rest Posey occasionally or play him at first base to spare him from the physical erosion of catching. Saturday's stint at first base will be the second for Posey in this eight-game stretch.

Bochy said that he discussed the subject with Posey on the team's flight from Houston. According to the skipper, Posey insisted that he felt fine and wanted to play. Bochy double-checked on Friday with Posey, who remained eager to play. Posey went 3-for-3 with two RBIs on Friday.

Whenever Bochy rests Posey, the skipper might face a respectful but forceful confrontation.

"I may have to take it out of his hands," Bochy said.
