Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated that Posey's vote total reflects his popularity.
"Sometimes it's out of sight, out of mind," Bochy said. "But when you get the kind of votes he got, he should feel good about it."
Posey entered Tuesday batting .295 with a team-leading six home runs and 29 RBIs. His .296 batting average with runners in scoring position (16-for-54) is another club-high total.
Yet the Giant who perhaps deserves All-Star recognition the most is far behind the leaders at his position. That would be left fielder Melky Cabrera, who began Tuesday leading the NL with a .364 batting average, 82 hits, 26 multi-hit games and seven triples.
Despite these gaudy statistics, Cabrera was fifth in voting among NL outfielders with 714,642 votes. Los Angeles' Matt Kemp topped this list with 1,952,910 votes, followed by St. Louis' Carlos Beltran at 1,212,030. Milwaukee's Ryan Braun (1,112,971) and Los Angeles' Andre Ethier (827,262) were third and fourth, respectively.
Pablo Sandoval was in fourth place among third basemen with 648,303 votes, trailing New York's David Wright (856,887), St. Louis' David Freese (824,801) and Atlanta's Chipper Jones (727,719).
