Giants concerned about Surkamp's elbow
SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that left-hander Eric Surkamp has experienced an unspecified setback in his recovery from a strained throwing elbow, which is an ominous development for the club's pitching depth.

Asked if the 24-year-old Surkamp might need surgery, Bochy said only, "Obviously there's concern."

Surkamp, who spent most of last season at Double-A Richmond, showed promise in Spring Training, posting a 3-1 record with a 4.41 ERA in five Cactus League appearances. He struck out 14 batters and walked five in 16 1/3 innings, a considerable improvement over his six-game stint last September with the Giants (13 strikeouts and 17 walks in 26 2/3 innings).
