Giants are victims of base thievery

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants have ranked among the league leaders in stolen bases all season, but lately they've been the victims of thievery more often than they've been the perpetrators.

Entering Saturday, opponents had stolen six bases in seven tries in the Giants' previous three games -- all San Francisco defeats. Naturally, manager Bruce Bochy noticed the trend and pointed out that pitchers, particularly left-handers, must hold runners on base more efficiently. Three of the six thefts came off lefties Pat Misch and Jonathan Sanchez.

"It's one thing to get a good jump. But a couple of times they got a running start, even though pitchers could see movement over there," Bochy said. "We need to tighten that up a little bit."

Bochy didn't fault his catchers, although backup Steve Holm has yet to throw out an opposing base stealer in 16 attempts. Bengie Molina entered Saturday having thrown out 5-of-20 runners, or 25 percent.
