at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Saturday, Mar. 1

A's at the plate: Oakland amassed 29 hits, including two apiece from Kurt Suzuki and Mike Sweeney in an eight-run first inning. Donnie Murphy's three hits featured a two-run homer in the third inning.

Giants at the plate: Dan Ortmeier rapped his first two hits of the spring. Eugenio Velez added two hits and is now 5-for-11 in three exhibition games.

A's on the mound: It was a good day for freshly imported left-handers. Starter Greg Smith, acquired in the Dan Haren trade, yielded one hit in two shutout innings before Gio Gonzalez, who came in the Nick Swisher deal, added two scoreless innings.

Giants on the mound: Barry Zito endured a harrowing outing against his former teammates, allowing eight runs and seven hits before departing with two outs in the first inning. Victor Santos' two innings included a scoreless fifth, the first in which the A's were blanked.

Cactus League records: A's 2-1; Giants 1-3.

Up next: A's left-hander Dana Eveland will confront the Colorado Rockies and right-hander Josh Towers in Phoenix. The Giants go to Mesa's HoHoKam Park, where right-hander Matt Cain will make his first Cactus League start against Ted Lilly.
