SAN FRANCISCO -- Manager Bruce Bochy sounded optimistic about third baseman Pablo Sandoval's return to the Giants' lineup for Friday's series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers at AT&T Park. A sore right quadriceps muscle forced Sandoval out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers, though he pinch-hit leading off the ninth inning and flied out to medium-deep right field. Bochy reasoned that Sandoval will receive essentially two days of rest, combined with Thursday's scheduled off-day.
"I think he's going to be fine to [play] Friday," Bochy said. "Talking to Dave Groeschner, our head trainer, he's confident that he'll be all set to go." With Sandoval on the bench, the Giants mustered three hits, matching a season low, and lost, 1-0. Sandoval, who's batting a team-high .313, was replaced by Mike Fontenot, who received his first start of the season at third base. He had played 69 games at third in previous seasons.
