Wilson vows to be ready for season opener
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Brian Wilson again vowed Monday to be sufficiently recovered from the mildly strained oblique muscle in his left side in time to perform in the March 31 regular-season opener at Los Angeles.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that Wilson, the team's two-time All-Star closer, might begin playing light catch on Wednesday. Bochy acknowledged that he felt more optimistic about Wilson's condition than he was on Saturday, when the right-hander's injury became public.

"That's a credit to the type of shape he's in and his response to the treatment," Bochy said.

As Wilson said, "The good thing about having your arm strength back is you can literally take a week off from baseball, and come right back in like you've lost nothing."

Wilson, who was re-examined Monday by team doctors, insisted that he could pitch now if necessary.

"If it's a regular-season game, I'm throwing," Wilson said. But, he added, "There's really no point in risking anything by going out and pitching the sixth inning of a Spring Training game on March 21."

Wilson, who led the Major Leagues with 48 saves last year before recording six more in the postseason, indicated that he won't rush to resume throwing, the better to avoid tearing the muscle -- as he did in his Giants debut on April 23, 2006. A tear could sideline Wilson for a prolonged period.

"It's more important that I'm ready in June or August or September than right now," he said. "The worst thing that could happen is you'd tear something if you tried to come back too early, which isn't worth risking an entire season."
