Sandoval rests with hip issue; Renteria starts

LOS ANGELES -- Pablo Sandoval was nagged by tightness in his hips, prompting Giants manager Bruce Bochy to leave the third baseman out of Saturday's lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Sandoval has started a team-high 129 games. He also began the evening sharing the club lead in games with Aubrey Huff (130 apiece).

The switch-hitting Sandoval entered Saturday in a .174 tailspin (4-for-23), including a hitless streak of 11 at-bats. He also was hitting .208 on the road, contrasting with a .336 average at AT&T Park.

Sandoval's break enabled shortstop Edgar Renteria to start his first game since Aug. 10 against the Chicago Cubs. Juan Uribe moved to third base.

Renteria was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list last Wednesday, having recovered from a strained left biceps. The 15-year veteran is on pace to participate in 73 games, which would mark a career low.
