Affeldt encouraged by latest 'pen session

SAN FRANCISCO -- After throwing a successful bullpen session Sunday, left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt seemed optimistic he'd be off the disabled list and back in the Giants bullpen sooner rather than later.

On Sunday, Affeldt threw a 30-pitch bullpen session, a few days following a 20-pitch session. Affeldt didn't throw breaking balls either time, but said he did spin a few curveballs from flat ground Sunday.

Affeldt (left oblique strain) said he has another bullpen session scheduled for Tuesday, where he would throw breaking balls and offspeed pitches, and said he should have a good gauge on when he'll return, which he hopes is the third week of August.

"I would assume that if everything continues, it'd be around then," Affeldt said. "It seems like that'd be a good target day. ... I think it all just depends."
